5 reasons : Why we like Indie Game?

And why we like Pig-Min? >.<

1. Sounds (Looks) cool.

'Indie' means 'Independent'. Well. It doesn't matter whether you know 'independent from of what', however it sounds (looks) cool. :)

2. Something different (from major games).

We can't expect [GTA 4] from indie games. (Maybe something similar to [GTA 1]?) But we could expect [Uplink], 'Hacking game which could be compared to [GTA]'. [Uplink] is NOT big-budget game as [GTA 4], but Rockstar can't (or might not) make [Uplink]. We can get [Uplink] / [Blackwell Legacy] / [Karoshi], only from Indie Game scene.

3. Genres which are Not available in Major Maket anymore.

You might like some side-scroll or Top-down shooter, but no major company will release them. You could play something old, but wish to meet kinda new games. So what can you do? Get some shooter as [Jets'n'guns] or [Crimsonland]1, from Indie Game scene.

4. Kinda brotherhood, or be more friendly?

There are some 'brotherhood' feeling among Indie Music scene. There could be somewhat similar for Indie Game scene, even we don't have some live club & small concerts.

And even if you don't join some brotherhood or clan, we could send friendly mail to Dave Gilbert at Wadjet Eye Games & get kind answer, while we can't be so easily friend with CEO of EA or Project Manager of [Rock Star].

5. Pride (for what you like).

You can't blame your friends who enjoys [World of Warcraft], however you could be proud of playing something indie RPG, as [Aveyond] / [Geneforge 5]. Something indie & not-so-well-known things are always our favorites, who wish to have some pride in cultural taste. :D

Footnote.
  1. Eh... These are already older games, too, anyway just for example. :) [Back]

5 reasons : Why Popcap is Good?

User image
To my happy, they never disappoint me after [Bookworm Adventures] in 2006.

1. [Bejeweled].

Who didn't play [Bejeweled] at all? If you've not played it, that's just misunderstood, you might not remember the name.

Of course, [Bejeweled] is NOT everything Popcap has, anyway it has been really big sales / play time until now. And for some Casual Gamers who don't remember the names, [Bejeweled] is Popcap & Popcap is [Bejeweled].

2. 1 game -> Many platforms as possible.

Their unique business style. "Make 1 game & Convert to Many platforms as possible." That really works for their business, and our gaming needs.

For example, [Bejeweled] has been released for Windows PC (Download / Web) - Gaming Console (XBOX Live Arcade) - Mobile (PDA / Cell / Smart / iPhone) - In-flight entertainment system - Hotel game-on-demand - Lottery(!) ticket - and even [World of Warcraft] & Facebook.

3. Really good Casual Games.

I'm not sure every Popcap games has been good. But at least, after [Bookworm Adventures] in 2006, all Popcap games by 'major studio' are good.1

[Bookworm Adventures] - [Peggle] series - [Bejeweled Twist] - and recent masterpiece [Plants vs Zombies]. 4 great (or good for somebody) games in 4 years. How can't I like that company?

4. They care about Hard Core Gamers, too.

Basically Popcap is making games for Casual Gamers. Casual Game market is very different from Hard Core Games, as you already know. But to my suprise, or just be simple, they also care about Hard Core Gamers!

For [Plants vs Zombies], you could clear 'Adventure Mode' not-so-hard. After that, real game starts which is more challening. For [Peggle] series - [Bejeweled Twist], both of them have 'harder challening levels', which could be good gifts for Hard Core Gamers.

And Popcap is selling their games at Steam2, which could be 'Sanctuary of Hard Core Gamers'. Not just selling their games at Steam, but also does some Promotion as [Peggle Extreme] - add Steam Achievements at [Plants vs Zombies].

5. They research for 'Stress Relief' & 'Family Unite with Casual Game'.

Popcap is doing many Surveys - Researches about 'Stress Relief' & 'Faminy Unite with Casual Game'.3

You might not think that's so important. Anyway that's kinda Counterattack to the 'Video Games are Evil' theory, and could grow Ecosystem of whole Casual Game market - even Video Games.

Footnote.
  1. Not sure about others as [Mystery P.I.] series by Spintop, branch of Popcap. [Back]
  2. Let's skip XBOX360 Live Arcade at now. [Back]
  3. If you're getting Press Releases from Popcap, you might get many of them at 2008, as I did. [Back]

5 Reasons : Why Team Fortress 2 is good?

User image
You might like [Team Fortress 2], as I do.

1. Even Casual Gamer could survive for a whlie, even kills some enemy.

I'm very bad at FPS multiplay, always die within seconds. I'm casual player at FPS multiplay. But in [Team Fortress 2], I could survive longer than seconds, in fact minutes! And even I can kill somebody, make some scores.

3 minor reasons. (1) This is hugh Team Play. If our team has good players, I could gain benefit. (2) I could choose supporting job as Engineer, even if I'm not 180 degree turn-double jumping-headshot tech. (3) It's rather 'Party Game w/ unknown people', rather than serious hardcore FPS.

2. 19.99$ only, better than 'Free 2 Play', no need to buy item.

There are many 'Free 2 Play' games including FPS, especially in Korea. We could play for free, if we don't purchase anything. But if we start paying real money, well, fee will increase really high. 'Gain lots from few payers', that's the way how 'Free 2 Play' earns money.

For [Team Fortress 2], you could pay only 19.99$ & no more, unless if you donate some server fee. I don't have to buy additional item, because others don't.

3. Animated Gore, but not so serious.

If we shoot enemy, we'd like to see good feedback. Gore could be good feedback, because it really happens when we got shot, but we don't like to see serious Gore. [TF2] found really good answer, 'Animated Gore but not so serious'.

When got bombed, arms here - legs there, all scattered. But it's not so shocking, because it's 'Animated Gore but not so serious', while we good really good feedback to kill 'em all.

4. Still updating, because it's Steam's main bait. They will never give up, for a long time.

I've not played for a while around 1-year, started again recently. I got shocked how much it was updated. Same game but different, much better for several things.

Why Valve is still updating? [TF2] is 1 of main bait, to let people use Steam longer & longer. Unless Steam closes or [TF3] appears, they will never stop updating. That's not for the money, for much bigger business strategy.

5. Still could play with other people, many of them.

There are many Multiplay games, or Singleplay games which supports Multiplay. For Multiplay, if people don't play, that game dies. To our happy, we could find lots of buddies / enemies for [TF2].
